with some limited experience in military matters Jack's question 'How long would it take to train an army?' is the kind of question, perhaps, a doctor would ask.
I can see some interesting dyamics devleoping there.
In the opening sequences of series 1 ep 1 Jack was seen doing an 'Appreciation' of the situation as per his medical training and prioritising the injuries as per his training.
I thought a new thread for us might be to do an assessment of the relative strenghts and weaknesses of the Others and the Losties. We could include time frames, the land, friendly forces, equipment etc.
I would think that Sayid (especially), if not Locke (with his war games), would want to do all of that before there was any talk of an army.
There's not enough to do a correct comparrison, not enough data to decide to even field an army IMO. We don't know manpower, firepower, or motive for either the Seabillies or the Others. That alone proves Jack is being to impulsive IMO. Which isn't to say they better do something if they care about Walt. Then again it's not like they did anything to get Claire back, they pretty much wrote her off to. Then again that was also before the hatch though too.

Any thoughts?
Well first the title of the thread says it all The objective of war is to 'WIN plain and simple. Jack seems to rise to challenges even with Gabrell's father. He took the chanllege. He is not a leader he just rises to challang. I am sure there is alot mor to it but that is the way I see it.

Good thoughts, so how does this play into actually winning the "war"?

It just seems to me that Jack does not like to lose. Zeek challenged him. and he is taken him on. Sara challanged him with the I will never dance at my wedding comment. I am sure if we look through out the show we will see that ever thing he has done was not a leader but a man that will not lose a challenge.
I know to deep at least in my own headI think it is
the winning the war comment is relavante just in the fact that we only have a war to win it is that simple Ok I am babbling ha
My thought was that the the time of Jack being the leader is over. He has served his purpose in that role, for now, anyway. The Losties have some kind of shelter, food supply... all that basic stuff.
Sayid has experience of being a leader in a military environment (and from what we saw what an experience...).
I think I get you. So basically Jack is willing to put his own people at risk to beat Friendly. I'm not surprised.
I think it has more to do with Jack needing someone to save (Walt, Michael ... himself?), sometimes at the expense of others (e.g. Sarah). Perhaps he realizes they are headed toward a confrontation with the Zeke's of the island, so for him an army is a logical step... Shoot first, ask questions later (or never ask questions at all!?).

I thought Sarah had it right. Jack will always need something to fix. The planning, preparation and execution of a 'war' is totally different.
Should there be situations in the war that go wrong? He will have something to fix again.
