Fire + Water and The Elements

I get now that the whole "Fire + Water" title is most likely talking about the fire Charlie started and the water used for the baptism. When I first read the title though, it made me think about the elements. Found this on an astrology website... talking about when the elements are translated into personality traits or temperaments:

Quote:
Fire and Water Type
The heavy emphasis on Fire and Water elements in your chart would indicate a general tendency to express everything emotionally, excitedly, and rather impulsively. There is often a lack of logical, systematic thought and procedure, with a resulting restlessness and subjective bias. This combination has intensity, emotional extremes, and surprising sensitivity to what others think of them. You are a "whole-hogger," having a marked lack of self-restraint. You may experience big swings in moods. You function in a high-pressure state, and you do best when being challenged.
Sound like Charlie? I think so. Sounds exactly like what he did last night, sans drugs. Anyway, thought it was interesting. I truly believe Charlie has Aaron and Claire's best interests at heart... so I believe that he thinks Aaron is in mortal peril. If you think about it... Charlie has been living in a state of desperation for so long now, it's a way of life. He was desperate to be successful. Desperate to save his family. Desperate to be famous (what else but desperation could possibly persuade you to dance around in a diaper on national television). Desperate for drugs once he got hooked. He was desperate for approval from those he loved. He's desperate to have a family... desperate to have Claire and Aaron. Desperation forces you to make some pretty rash decisions. Seems that's what Charlie did last night.

I liked all the religious references in last night's epiode... but we might as well throw in the astrology angle too.

I don't mean to pee-pee on your parade but that's not exactly what the title means. The title means there were three baptisms:

1- Charlie by fire
2- Claire and Aaron by water

Charlie had to go through a Hellish ordeal to achieve what he thought was right -- Baptism by fire.

Claire and Aaron were ritualitically baptised with water by Eko the priest.

Oh. Well thanks for the clarification. Apparently I didn't "get" it at all. Bad choice of words, I guess.

Why Fire + Water instead of Fire & Water?

I liked the astrology thing--it seemed to describe Charlie perfectly. I don't get how Charlie as "baptized" by fire, though. That doesn't make any sense to me.

Re: Fire + Water and The Elements

Interesting take on the symbolism, there. I don't think it's mutually exclusive with the baptism reference, but I'll have to see the episode before I elaborate on that. (Quick note: fire signs are signs of the intellect, water signs are signs of the emotions... and I doubt the writers would go so far as to study the combos to make that particular ref.)

OTOH, they did introduce astrology into the show's universe back in S1, so it's definitely fair game when it comes to speculation. (IIRC, Kate told Claire she was a Gemini and her dissonant personality is more or less in tune with the sign. Maybe if she ever gets to celebrate her birthday, we'll know at least what month it is.)

I like your handle on Charlie...I think you are right on the mark!

The writers are playing on many levels with Lost, I think? From the obvious to left field
Fire and water- elements...also each eliminates the other....opposites? Someone somewhere connected the elements to the Dharma sign. Just like the white vs black, the faith vs science, right vs wrong, etc It is all giving me a headache...but I love the show!

It lets your mind play with so many ideas

Re: Fire + Water and The Elements

Just an observation of my own...

Water represents repentence and fire represents judement.

I'm not sure how this would fit into Charlies' episode, however. It seemed more to be about Charlie being the "savior" of his world (family, band) and those he was trying to save turning away from him and saving their own - Charlie trying to save Liam but Liam chose his own family over Charlie. Then Charlie feeling as though he were saving Claire and the baby - rescuing the baby from Danielle, being Claire's friend through her amnesia time and pregnancy and now she and the baby have turned away from him.

Re: Fire + Water and The Elements

Question:
"What is the "baptism of fire"?"

Answer:
The "baptism of fire" is only mentioned in two places in the Bible:
"I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire." (Matthew 3:11) "John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire."" (Luke 3:16)
I think you may be reading too much into the title. As I stated before I think it basically refers to dual baptisms.
