I'm no computer expert, but something occurred to me:
If there's a huge electromagnetic field in the hatch, wouldn't that mess the electronics of the computer up?
When a nuclear bomb goes off it releases an electromagnetic shockwave or pulse, which shorts out all ectronics in a mile (?) (or more) radius. So wouldn't it stand to reason that this giant electromagnet would do the same to the computer? Not to mention wiping out all those ancient reel to reel data tapes.
I thought that too, about the magentic field and the tapes. If you look in the computer room there is a geodesic dome structure. I suppose this could be a farraday cage that shields the computer equipment from the magnetic fields.

oh ya i wondered what that dome was for, seems like a plausible idea,
Wow, you guys sure know your stuff. I'm glad this was brought up; it had occured to me but I had no idea if my wonderings were at all valid. Thanks to you clever cookies for clearing it up. The topic will probably be brought up further along in the show ... and who knows -maybe it's a little trickier than it seems?
