It sure seemed as though Ethan had some sort of feeling for Claire. Would he have really let Zeke and the others kill her for her baby, if he did indeed like her? Even though he gave Claire the tainted water, he did take her outside, and really had no reason to lie and say that she could go back to camp afterwards. I wonder if he knew that killing her was part of the 'plan'....if he did, it seemed strange that he would get attached to her, unless it was all an act
Re: Did Ethan know they were going to kill Claire?
That all seemed very strange to me as well. I thought he knew of the plan to kill her until he started to talk about how she had a choice. In the end I'm deciding to go with he knew and was just trying to keep her passive and comfortable to make their job easier.
Re: Did Ethan know they were going to kill Claire?
Ya, I think that Ethan's just a really good guy at putting on a show. Remember how nice he was to Hurley about the passenger list, and then remember how he acted when his cover was blown. He's an evil man through and through, but he knows how to get on people's good sides when he can, and make them believe what he wants them to.
Re: Did Ethan know they were going to kill Claire?
but there was no NEED to, she was doing perfectly fine sedated in the hatch, im sure they had the drugs necessary to keep her calm and down there, why was the act really necessary, unless it wasn't?
Re: Did Ethan know they were going to kill Claire?
I feel like Ethan's pretty low-down on the Others' pecking order. After all, they sent him on the dangerous infiltration mission, from which there was a good chance he wouldn't come back alive, and the way Zeke talked to him made it seem like Zeke was a notch or two above him in the hierarchy. Therefore, I'm not sure he knew that Claire was going to be killed. She was completely loopy from the drugs, and so he really did have no need to talk to her the way he did just to make her feel more "secure."
Maybe he was a nurse, like Ben Stiller in "Meet the Parents."
Re: Did Ethan know they were going to kill Claire?
Yeah, totally weird, right? I didn't quite get it either. He didn't need to take her outside and do that. I thought he was going to kiss her! EW.
Ok, so maybe... he did like her. Maybe the plan was to kill her, but what Ethan hoped to do, since he liked her, was to let Dharma take the baby and then while the other doctors were busy with the baby, help her back to camp. Dunno... Weird right.
But let's not forget what happened during Homecoming. He comes back for her. The plans were foiled. And he was freakin' nasty. So while he might have liked Claire, he needed Claire back there because of the baby.

OOH OOH, I got it. Once Claire escapes, Alex manages to cover her tracks, and the Others put the blame on Ethan because they know he had a thing for her. They threaten to kill Ethan if he doesn't bring her back, so he freaks out.
I'm not a member of the "Ethan is a good guy!" camp, but it seemed to me in this episode that he's more of a pawn than the one calling the shots.
Re: Did Ethan know they were going to kill Claire?
Now that I've watched the episode again, I'm thinking more that Ethan really did like Claire. I'm still sure that he is a bad guy at heart, but I'm not so sure now that he was putting on an act about liking her. Maybe the plan was never to kill her, but they decided that they needed the baby out now, and changed their plan to cut him out of her. Also, in "Homecoming", he seemed really angry about wanting her back, as if there was a personal reason for wanting her back...
Re: Did Ethan know they were going to kill Claire?
I think Ethan did like Claire, but he was still going to let her die. He could have let her go when he took her for a walk if he wanted to. And if he didnt want her to die, why was he so hell bent on getting her back when she escaped?
