I've been actually depressed all week. As the show goes further and further downhill, I'm conflicted with a desire to keep watching (just in case it's all been some kind of elaborate setup, that the show will redeem itself with some kind of big reveal at the end of the season), and the desire not to watch anymore (because the characters annoy me by being so stupid all the time, and it's making me embarassed that I ever got into the show in the first place). Plus, for the first time, I seem to be completely certain, in my heart of hearts, that the show I fell in love with is truly gone.
I've been reading the 'Loved It!!!" thread, and the various still-enthusiastic-speculation threads, trying to rekindle some sort of appreciation, and I just can't. All the show's True Believers just say some variation of 'OMG WHAT A SHOCK' or something. There are a few exceptions that attempt to explore the significance of the show's events, and what they mean for the characters, and those are pretty well thought-out, but my reaction is, "why should we have to sit around and come up with explanations for unexplained events?" After all, shouldn't that be the job of the writers, to at least hint at the significance of what their characters say and do? You can't just throw a bunch of random plot devices together and retroactively choose the best fan-supplied rationalization for it.
Anyway, as I said before, it feels like the Dark Tower all over again; all build-up, no delivery. Except the Dark Tower stayed enthralling for 5 of the 7 books. This show made it only 1 season. Even some semblance of consistency throughout the empty build-up is proving too Herculean a task for these dreck-spewing puppetmasters.
Keeping in mind that there is more to the story, I'm still trying to patiently await an explanation before going off on it, but I have not been able to imagine a scenario of Michael's actions being anything other than yet another character assassination - of his character, not just AL and Libby.
I agree scope. I'm hoping that #1, they explain it and #2, the explanation makes sense.
There's so many other things going on, I don't want to wait until the middle of next season to find out why Michael killed Ana-Lucia. I would be very mad if they swept this under the rug like so many other things.
TPTB have asked the audience to trust them and really haven't done much to actually earn that trust. It's about time they start.
(because the characters annoy me by being so stupid all the time, and it's making me embarassed that I ever got into the show in the first place).
Ditto, s-bear.
I sort of have no comment about Lost these days with regards to my friends. For most of the summer, I talked up Lost SO MUCH that now just thinking about it gives me that stomach knot wave of embarrassment.

Can I ditto a ditto?
I am wondering if the new way to watch this show and save face with all the friends and co-workers I roped into this must-see-it-it-is-so-cool-and-brilliant-show, might be to start watching it ala Rocky Horror.
Geez, I hope some of you are old enough to remember that movie.

I also got quite a few people to watch Lost in the beginning and feel bad about it now. I had taped the premiere and gave it to friends to watch. Everyone I know except one person has stopped watching... and not because of American Idol. People I know stopped watching because they got sick of it because of the exact same criticisms fans discuss here.

It may be best to make a drinking game out of watching:
Sawyer calls Hurley some "clever" name because he's overweight- take a drink
Kate does something stupid she's been asked not to- take a drink
Someone withholds information and fails to communicate like a normal human being- take a drink
Michael yells about getting his "boy back"- take a drink
You hear the musical cue for a flashback- - take a drink (and also go to the bathroom if needed as you will not miss anything relevant)
During a one characters flashback, another character "unexpectedly" pops up- take a drink
At the end they play a meloncholy song and have a montage of everyone on the beach- take a drink
By the end of the show you will remember absolutely nothing, and most likely have alcohol poisoning, but will have enjoyed yourself more than if you were sober.

I know what everyone is saying. I am now the only one in my family and friends that do watch this show. This is considering the fact that I was also the one that first told them to watch. Most of the people that don't watch anymore, don't watch because of AI. They stopped watching because of the stupid things the characters were doing and the annoying things they had to do, like Locke and the counter in the hatch. That is my husbands main complaint.
On the drinking game part if I did that I really wouldn't care what was going on in Lost because I'd be too blitzed to care. PosseGal, I remember Rocky Horror.
Michael knew Ana pretty well. They trekked across the island and he saw her shoot Shannon, and tie up Sayid. He probably figured no one would be bothered by her death. I have to wonder what he'd of done if Jack was down there, or if John Locke was guarding the armory. Would he have tried to kill them?
Ekko falling off the cliff -- it would seem like all the tailies are being written out of the show except bernard.
If so the entire season was a waste. I am pissed that if Libby is dead the whole asylum thread will go un developed.
I am glad that AL is gone. her whole arc just seemed out of whack. Having seen it I don't get how it would have been in her character to hit on Jack at the airport bar. She is just bitter 24/7.
