There's a lot of talk about Jack and Sawyer playing poker, but I've seen no mention of what struck me right away about that scene and why I think it may be more significant than it first appears.
Jack approaches Hurley and Sawyer and calls out what they have without having seen any of the play beforehand and he's very confident about it, too. When Kate asks him what she has, he says, "You're just playing for fun" or something like that, kind of implying maybe she wasn't concentrating enough for him to pick it up. Then Sawyer says something like, "What makes you think you're in my head?" And Jack proceeds to dispatch Sawyer with absolute ease, which is odd because Sawyer the conman would be expected to be a terrific poker player. He is no match for Jack, though. I think it's because Jack can see the cards.
I think Jack may have some psychic abilities (similar to Walt and Locke?) that he isn't even aware of.
Nah, a good poker player knows what everyone at the table has. It comes with experience. I have seen it happen many times while playing, some people are better at it than others, but it does seem amazing the first time you see it. Betting patterns help.
Ever see the movie "Rounders" with Matt Damon? A similar demonstration is done when his character walks into a room with other people playing cards- just by looking at them he can tell what cards they have. It's just to show us how experienced Jack is at poker & how much the others have tells that they didn't even know about.
It's true I don't know much about poker so if Jack's performance isn't necessarily uncommon, there's probably nothing to it . . . I just thought he showed some remarkable intuitiveness and I thought that might be a point of the scene.
his experience is why jack was able to beat sawyer so easily at the game. i would bet (no pun intended) that sawyer is a pretty hot poker player, esp with being a conman. but this is just an example of jack showing sawyer he has the upper hand (ok....maybe that pun was intended )
While I don't discount the idea that Jack (and numerous others) are, indeed, psychic -- I think the more interesting aspect of the poker scene is Jack was so damn good. Who would've expected that the rich kid doctor would have had an opportunity to fine-tune his gaming skills? There's more to him than meets the eye...

i agree with you 100%... i play online all the time but far from an expert.. you would be amazed how you're able to know exactly what hands you're going against.. it gets easier the more you play..
