Always asking myself: "Whats the main goal?" i come to the conclusion that the main goal of the "Dave-Appearance" was to let Hurley jump down the cliff.
So i think later in this show we will find out, that the appearance of DAVE in yesterdays episode was an attempt of some entity or the island itself to kill hurley off by one of its projections (same principle as jacks father, shannons vision of walt just before she was shot etc)...
hurley may be an enormous threat for that whats lurks behind everything (most probably is hurley some later key island-antagonist through his link to the numbers, - all is predetermined, but two fractions still try to influence the outcome... perhaps libby is there to watch over hurley, therefore plays for the good side)
if thats not enough for a discussion, i will gladly re-edit this statement later with the "howling man" theory.
i just have to find it in my saved stuff, and update it to the dave-episode.
