Did anyone catch what that was about? Is it related to some kind of pagan ritual? I'm trying to wrap my head around it. I guess I'll have to watch the epi again. Eko said something about that being how they were able to find/see this place? I'm just finding it incredibly odd that Eko pieced together the location of the hatch because of this circle of salt on the ground.

Shootfire, I could be wrong, but wasn't Eko pointing out the salt creating the '?' in the field. And salt would be perfect to create the '?' since vegetation doesn't grow in salt, so the '?' is maintained.
Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp. Or what's a heaven for?
yes there is a religous aspect to a circle of salt. it eludes me though. but its also true that it would prevent anything from growing as it would suck up any moisture in that particular area.
I wonder WHO salted it...the others or someone(s) different, like another group of others etc
Plants or grass would not be able to grow in the salt...that is what would keep the circle intact so whoever was flying over could see it, like Eko said.
"Oh that guy doesn't matter! Let him stay locked up for another half an hour. The police will be here by then, and there are two dead bodies in the Study!"
Maybe so, but I didn't see a question mark on the ground. All I saw was a circle. Definitely going to have to watch it again. I completely get what you are saying about salt killing vegetation. I'm just wondering about Locke's drawing. There was a circle and a question mark. The question mark wasn't exactly in the middle of that circle like it was on the hatch map. I'm wondering if there is a reason for that. Something's just not sitting right for me.

I still believe what I said about the salt being used to stop growth of the field, but thinking about the religious conotation. Isn't there a mythology about demons/ghosts/vampires/werewolf/.. not being able to cross salt laid down into a barrier of sorts? I swear I've heard and seen it somewhere in a movie.

When you watch it again, you'll notice that the circl isn't closed- because it's not a circle- it's the question mark. The plane covered up the bottom part of the question mark- the straight line part. And the hatch door was the dot at the bottom- which if you remember- they had to move the plane to get to.
