The Button is Bad

To the mods -- the board's been so busy I haven't been able to log on til today so if this topic has been covered I understand if you merge this thread.
---

Did anyone else notice all the buttons in TOTC?

We know "button pushing" is a common and favored theme throughout the series but it was very prevalent in this episode:

- Sawyer had to push buttons in his "Pavlovian" cage
- Jack was pushing the button on the intercom
- Jack asked Juliet about the "emergency" button
- Juliet told Jack to push the emergency button
- Jack pushed his father's buttons at the AA meeting, which pushed him off the wagon so to speak

Am I missing anymore?

Re: The Button is Bad

I agree that buttons may be a common theme in the show.. It might be the whole idea of making a move when you don't know what the consequences will be. The first time Locke pushed the button in the hatch he asked desmond "what does it do?" but he pushed the button anyways without getting an answer.. Sawyer pushed that button in his cage even when Karl told him not to and Jack pushed the emergency button when Juliette told him to. It seems like a way to test the beliefs of the different characters, find out who they trust or what they are willing to risk.

If anything it is my opinion, that not all the buttons were bad, but good:
-The "Pavlovian" cage button gave Sawyer food and water, (albeit not nice food and
water)
-The Hydro "emergency" button stopped Jack and Juliet from drowning,
-Lets not forget the swan button was "saving the world" or at least stopping the electromagnetism leak build up.

I think the writers just like to have buttons. Remember the tasers have buttons as well.

It's a stretch but you could even argue that Jack was pushing "Sarah's buttons" so to speak when he was dialing all the numbers in her phone. It reminded me of the 4815162342 combo -- Jack was trying to find the combo to her heart.
