How come the monster makes noise when it walks?

Why do we hear footsteps when the monster walks? If it's a black cloud of smoke, how would it make footsteps?
It's not an error, and it's not because they didn't know what the monster was yet, because
1. They knew from the beginning what it was
2. We hear footsteps in the same episode that we first see it in, Exodus.

What do you think? I thought that maybe it's not footsteps, but it's supposed to be like thunder, since it looks like a stormcloud, but this seems unlikely, since it's in a rythmic fasion.

Re: How come the monster makes noise when it walks?

Hopefully we'll find out soon. My theory has always been the monster noises are a combination of all the survivors pasts noises that they would hear on a daily bases.

Remember when Rose said that the sounds are familar to her, in the pilot. Well, the noise that it makes, (In the 23 Pslam when we see the flashes of images), is
Spoiler:
the same sound a taxi cab makes when you get your reciept in The Bronx or whereever Rose was from. The writers confirm this in the 23rd Psalm commentary.

So maybe the big loud noises or footsteps comes from someone elses past -- Maybe Micheals Construction?

I'm assuming the Security System either has 2 or more manifestations or devices, or one manifestation / device that can change form.

The booming noise we hear is generally also when we see trees being pushed and pulled about. Then there's the chain noise and form. Then there's just plain old Smokey.

YAY, I thought I was going nuts thinking there was more than one monster!!! It seems like the clanky loud one was more prevalent in the 1st season and then Smokey came along later. (Though I could definitely be wrong about that... it just seems that way in my memory). The loud tree-pusher one hasn't been around lately.

I assume since it can download and assess whether or not it fears you, if sounded like a dinosaur since that's the the lowest common denominator of fear that Kate, Jack and the pilot had most in common.

They even shot that scene to look like something from Jurassic Park.

Then again, yes, they probably didn't know exactly how it should look and sound in the pilot... just that it should be Monster-ish.

Personally, I still think that is a possibility, that there is more than one "monster".

It's called the Security System and that system could easily compose of more than one "device", as I called it earlier.

I don't think that there is more than one monster/creature/security system, but the most valid clue that there could be more than one part to the monster is it's supposed name, if it really is called Cerberus then I would expect it to have three "heads" or functions.

I think that there's just one monster, because in Boone's dream in season one, when it pulls up the tree, if you pause it, you can see smoke around the bottom of the tree, and that it isn't really pulling it up, but it's pushing it up from the bottom.

Re: How come the monster makes noise when it walks?

I had assumed that the 'monster' wasn't making footsteps, it was just the sound of trees getting smashed. As far as I know, there is only evidence of the trees being smashed, the is no evidence of footprints, you never see a footprint of it. The crashing / thudding noises, in my opinion, are just the sounds of trees being smashed.

I think it's more complicated than that, because I asked Greg Nations about it, and he said that he wasn't allowed to answer.
