We've seen this device used time and time again this season. Last season was the season of direct torture. We saw it in Sayid's past and present (Sawyer and Ben).
Then things turned. Mike killed Ana and Libby to get Walt. Sayid was going to capture two other - on to make the other on cooperate. They have used Kate and Sawyer against each other a few times. They have used Kate and Sawyer against Jack. Jack is using Ben now. However things did't go so well for Jack when he put the broken plate to Juliet's neck - Ben walked away.
I wonder if Juliet will walk away.
