Well, Desmond didn't win that race around the world, but someone did.
I definitely think the trophy has signinficance, and probably a relationship to the Widmore's.
The only thing is, Libby says the name of her husband was David, I always thought of the connection between her David, and the Dave which is Hurley's imaginary friend. Just my two cents, thanks.
Yes, but the timeline fits. It seems as though Desmond's race, and Juliet's recruitment would be approximately the same time... Remember, he got hit by a bus in 2001, per the flashback.
We can't assume that Dr. Burke only had 1 ex-wife (Juliet). He was smarmy and probably had a slew of them. I do remember that Libby said her husband's name was David, who knows, maybe she and Hurley shared imaginary Dave... (that was obviously a joke).
Ok... I think I see now. (I'm one of the slow ones.)
Hi all, my fiancé and I are huge fans of the show and this website and thought it was time to contribute.
I'm home sick with the flu today and decided to re-re-rewatch the latest episode...
I noticed something in the "Not in Portland" episode that triggered a phonecall to her which she immediately added to. So, here it is.
In the scene with Juliet / Edmund, there is a sailing trophy on the desk behind Dr. Edmund. It stood out alot because it was a cheap standard blue trophy that I'm sure all of us have kicking around somewhere in a storage unit. I mentioned it to her, and she said "WOW, what if Dr. Edmund Burke is actually Libby's Ex-Husband?!".
Now, the part I don't recall exactly, is how Libby said her husband died when she was talking with Desmond. Do you? Does this make sense?
***EDIT*** I'm a massive tool. I meant LIBBY.
WHooooahhhh! Yet, I am hesitant, because Libby, when speaking to Des described her hubby as such a romantic person that he would have wanted someone who sails to have his boat, gave me the impression that the guy must have been a sweety...unlike this Edmund SOB.
However, maaaybe Edmund is somehow related to Widmore. Now, those 2 seem like 2 peas from the same crap hole. It could fit. They are both wealthy, powerful, self riteous, manipulative, and evidently have been exposed to sailing. Maybe past, or future in the past business partners?
Edmund Burke died at about the time Libby gave Desmond the boat. In between Libby's widowhood and Desmond getting the boat, Libby has to have a nervous breakdown, be there long enough for Hurley to have a vague memory of her, get better, leave, meet Desmond, give him the boat.
And if Edmund is Libby's dead ex, then she also have to get from Miami to LA. It just doesn't fit.
I like all the sailing connections with Des, David, Libby, Widmore, Burke, Michael, Jin and Sun, though. Be nice if that gets tied together.

When will we see Libby again? Will we ever learn how she got into the mental hospital with Hurley?
Spoiler:
CUSE: Given everything else we have to tell, that's going to be a mystery that's going to have to get answered in year 4. LINDELOF: There's really one significant missing piece to Libby's story. We saw in the season finale last year that she met with Desmond, she gave him his boat, and we know that her husband died — and then we know that subsequent to that, she spent some time in a mental institution, the same one as Hurley. The question the audience wants answered is, How did she get from A to B — from Desmond to the mental institution? We know the answer to that question, but the only way to tell that story is through another character's flashback, and that character would have to be another character on the show who is not among the beach dwellers.
Also, I think it's easier to say "he got sick" than saying
"my husband got hit by a bus while talking to his x-wife outside of his office, oh yeah, he was also having sexy funtime with the new research assistant".
Sounds like a perfect reason for her to go bonkers to me!

Maybe Libby's life was like Ethan's life...(maybe she works with Mittelos company, maybe Hanso Foundation, or anyelse; but she was spying a list of people (Desmond, Hurley and maybe Juliet's husband.....and like that guy from Mittelos, well, maybe she only play a rol....)
