It appears Mikhail has a good-sized ranch in his hatch's backyard, where we did see livestock and horses. Perhaps that is where Kate's black horse came from. Maybe it escaped the ranch, or the Others stole it like they stole two of Mikhail's cows.
This at least opens up another possibility other than the Smokey incarnate theory.

I thought the same thing - that the livestock and Bea Klue's horse at least explain that horses exist on the island, and explain how Kate was able to see and touch one.
However, was it firmly established in Kate's episode ("What Kate Did") that the one she saw on the island was THE horse she and the marshall almost ran over, or was it just a horse that looked like that horse?
If it was THE horse, then all it really says is that when Kate was arrested they passed the farm of a horse breeder that provided horses to the DHARMA initiative (or to the Others, whoever they are). It's the same kind of crazy coincedence that has Desmond running into Charlie on the street, or Hurley's accountant buying the company where Locke works.
I guess it's really The Horse vs. The Cat because both animals appear on the island, not to mention Locke's story for Skate about the golden retriever...is it mere coincidence or the same animal? The cat rather scared me at the end, haha.

I'm pretty sure that Kate felt it was the same horse, the way she went up to it and looked at it. So my guess is it's smokey able to appear as these things like Sayid's cat, the horse, eko's brother, jack's dad, ect.
The difference between smokey as Eko's Brother/Jack's Dad and the horse is that neither Eko nor Jack could reach or touch the apparition, nor could anyone else see them (or so we are led to believe). But Sawyer could see Kate's horse and Kate could touch it, implying that it is a totally different phenomenon than Eko's Brother and Jack's Dad. The horses at the Flame give us a plausible alternative.
The horse Kate saw was well groomed meaning it was a domestic animal. It would be logical for The Others to keep riding horses on the island - no need to import gas for them or repair parts etc plus recreation as well as transportation.
I have felt ever since Kate saw the horse that it was merely an animal that had escaped from The Others. Heck they can't even keep caged bears or Lostees so losing a horse would be easy.
It could be. I think the cat triggered Sayid's flashback, so that could have been a normal cat. But Kate saw the horse after the flashback. So either she happened to see the horse at the end of her flashback, or it's Smoky.
