Firing Pin Question/Comment

First, let me say how grateful my husband and I are for this thought-provoking, intelligent show.

Now...a small gripe/question:* How likely is it really that Sayid, a trained soldier, would not have noticed that the firing pin was missing from the rifle? When he pulled the trigger and the rifle didn't go off, my husband and I immediately turned to each other and said, "Oh, come on! He's an elite soldier for pete's sake!" Then we started to think that maybe that's why you guys made the firing pin be missing, instead of the gun being unloaded (we're Canadian, we don't know anything about guns). Or did you just decide to push the boundaries of believability a little for the sake of plot?

Thank you and good luck with the rest of the season.
