I commented on this in the "watching live thread" last week and I've been wondering why TPTB inserted this particular scene in The Answers ever since....

Spoiler:
I have a sneaky suspicion that the scene was put in the show to foreshadow that Jack may re-consider the path he thinks he wants, (i.e., "science/technology") and takes a leap of faith.
In what way? I'm not sure, but I sense some eventual meeting of the minds between Jack & Locke.
(I'm assuming that Locke survives Ben's murder attempt...I just can't see that his character arc is done.)
I think the very fact that Jack is flying around looking for a way back to the island suggests that in the flash forward, he's no longer a man of science - he's become a man of faith. I wonder if he will have to truly lose everything to find his faith, or whether he can find it in time to not become druggie, pathetic Jack.

I love this idea. There was something about that line that bugged me - research "vessel" is odd I think. Off topic, but I've been bugged about those empty leg-irons on that thing since we saw them. Where'd the slaves go?
