This has really annoyed me about the Locke character. This Walkabout is a life quest.
He goes doesn't check about wheelchair access. Did he never checks other tours in the whole continent if even for price checks or to see whats offered. He had a computer. It made no sense.

Kalgoorlie has the biggest open pit gold mine in Australia, 'The Super Pit' which is an awesome 4 km long, 1.5 km wide

I find this most interesting. I, too, have been researching Kalgoorlie and was led to a museum exhibit displaying a chunk of meteorite. The picture looked like a black rock, and I found that intriguing. Here's what I learned.
Two meteorites were found in Western Australia in 1966, Mundrabilla I and II. Mundrabilla I had a mass, I believe, of 11.7 tons. Both meteorites have large concentrations of iron alloy materials. Now, chunks of Mundrabilla meteorite are being studied by different nations and agencies. NASA has a chunk that it is studying to help identify new materials for use in the space program.
Further searches of Mundrabilla meteorite brought me to this site.
Notice, almost as a footnote there is a reference to scientist's theories that organic compounds found in meteorites may be the source of life on earth.
Suppose there was more of Mundrabilla on an island in the Pacific. Suppose it contained organic compounds. Could this be the source of a "sickness?" Could high concentrations of iron be the source of magnetic disturbances that interfere with navigational equipment on planes and ships? Could the entire island have it's foundation on a meteorite? Could that explain why a scientific team would be attracted to it, and why other vessels might also have crashed there instead of the middle of the ocean?

Kalgoorlie is a pretty interesting place.* Giant gold mines, (and other metals), huge meteorites, it's near aborigiinal territory and I guess it's at least on the edge of* the Outback.* If they chose it for a reason, there are plenty of leads to pursue.
By the way, when I originally read the transcript for Numbers, it placed Mrs. Toomey in Kalgoorlie.* That has been removed.* I know it was removed because I copied the transcripts to a clipboard to search for something, and my copy doesn't match the current transcript.* Now it's just "the middle of nowhere."*
