Back in the 80's, I worked for a company that was owned by a company that was owned by CBS.
We could never get anything done because every requistion would get stuck in some beaureurats'
inbox at The Black Rock.
Do you think that it's called a Black Rock because, well, It's black - and it's a rock?! Here in Australia we have a Red Rock in the Red Centre ... ;D
Yes - I know I am not being helpful here but I couldn't resist.
BTW - Black Rock is a natural lava rock formation that extends from a portion of the grounds of the Sheraton Maui Resort (Hawaii), approximately 100 yards into the ocean. Now - this series is filmed IN HAWAII ... do you think they just may have adopted the name?
True, Rayder - one of those stones was "a black rock" ... but do you think the french woman would have mapped it if it was the size of a pebble? ...
I'm kinda leaning on a metaphor for the stones - one black, one white. One good, one evil. One good luck, one bad. Then again, nothing in this story has been difinitively "black or white" has it?
Locke = White stone = good luck
Hurley = Black stone = bad luck
Locke and Walt - one is "white", one is "black" - they play backgammon together with the white and black pieces ... it goes to show that white and black can battle each other, but still live on the same game board.
... but do you think the french woman would have mapped it if it was the size of a pebble? ...
Well I didn't mean it *was* the Black rock...but maybe it is part of it?
And what about Michael....he seems to be the only one actively attempting to get them off the Island. He's been a tower of strength....some may say a "rock"
I think the jab at CBS is possible, but so is a nod to the black slab in Kubrick's 2001 -- but all-and-all, I do not think either is the main reason whatever it is called the "Black Rock".
I think there really is a rock on the island that is black and that it is near the broadcast tower.
I do not think it is just pumice rock from cooled lava.
I think the rock has something to do with the compass not working correctly.
I also think the rock is black to symbolize that it has power, some sort of negative energy or evil (the connotation of black stone = bad has been established by Locke telling Walt this in just about so many words).
Questions are:
was the rock there when the tower went up or is it part of the "tower-hatch-cable-thingy"?
did the power of the rock corrupt the "experiment" or what ever the tower and hatch thing are for, causing some unexpected results?
BTW, I'm hovering in the Montauk Experiment camp *--- totally not into the Time travel, Genetics, Purgatory, *or Locke is a Spy camps. Though, my stance may soon change -- I once thought Ethan might be Alex, but that later thought that was just nuts, I now think Ethan has something to with... errrr.... nevermind spoiler stuff.
