I thought the whole "2 warring factions" was clumsily handled. The last exchange between the 2 groups was cordial enough,if not exactly friendly. Then all of a sudden, they are both on a war footing,Sayid etc going in all guns blazing, and Locke etc laying traps.
OK,the arrival of the 4 has changed things,,but we could have done with a scene where the 2 groups became antagonistic towards each other.I have to say this doesn't bode well for the 8 into 5 episodes,,have a feeling they will be rushed.
Also irritated when Sayid swapped Myles for Charlotte........Locke already HAD Myles. Why would he give Sayid one of his two captives, for nothing in return?
My one crit of this episode (and so I'll post it here) was Desmond's almost giddy happiness over the helicopter. He just didn't strike me as a guy who just lost a friend, and more than that, that sent that friend to his death so that helicopter would come. I expected more mixed feelings and I think that was poor continuity.
i've started agreeing with Pacejunkie's thoughts, here. While I thought the episode was pretty stunning on a story level, a lot of the details felt off. The characters' emotiosn weren't quite in the right place, and the shift in mindset between the two groups wasn't quite right.
All in all, while I still enjoyed the episode (i probably even loved it), it was a bit clumsy...when's the next Cuse, Lindelof, Godard or Vaugn episode? I like those writers a lot.

Ditto. I still liked the episode but youre right, the two warring factions thing wasn't played up enough. I found it hard to understand how their could be so much animosity already.
"...Jack and Sawyer. They're the duality. They're one of the most important character axes on the show."

I found this kind of rushed, like they were thinking "Oh, Desmond isn't at the helicopter, but he needs to be there to find out why they had a picture of Penny" so they quickly wrote him in there. I just felt like there was poor continuity all over this episode.
The lack of explanation for the Sonic Fence is another one. They made a pretty big deal of it on several episodes, Locke throwing Mikhail into it, Juliet turning it on to block Smokie, and now we've seen 2 groups of people get by it with no explanation of how they did it. The last we saw of it, it was turned on by Juliet, after the Others had left Otherton. Now when Locke and company came up to it, I guess they could have forced Ben to open it (if he had, it wouldn't have been consistent with his character though, but it's an explanation) but how did Satid, Kate and Miles get by it?

The Hurley situation is a big problem I had with this episode, completely out of character for Hurley to turn on his friends and be deceptive like that. One of the previous scenes had Hurley questioning Locke's decisions before Locke pulled the "Me Leader. you shut up" line, so why all of a sudden would Hurley do a complete 180? Doesn't make sense. Plus he seems uneasy of Sayid and says it's because of the neck breaking thing on the beach, but didn't Hurley kill someone by running over him? If anything, the only death Hurley questioned at the time was Sawyer's when he killed Tom because "he surrendered" and guess who's Hurley's with? SAWYER!! This all went against Hurley's character and was extremely poor continuity.
Then the whole Sayid thing I had a problem with. On the island, and even most of this episode, we see a confident, strong Sayid, then at the end of this episode he's weak and broken? And he's working with an off island Ben? I love twists, and that's why I love LOST but this one just seems too much. I understand that Ben is manipulating Sayid somehow, but I'll never be on board with a "good" Ben, the man is just pure evil, and if he turns out to be the "good" guy I'll be extremely disappointed.
I haven't commented on here in a while, but this was the least enjoyable episode in a while. I wasn't blown away by the premiere, but it certainly wasn't bad. This episode was beyond boring. Was I supposed to be "wowed" by the "reveal" that Ben was Sayid's mainland "boss"? Because I wasn't. I was annoyed and bored.
For what it's worth, I did like the Sawyer and Kate scenes because it featured genuine human interaction. I just felt so disconnected from the rest of the episode.
