Ok, I hate to be a thread spammer tonight, but I'm able to pause abc.com and think and then put my thoughts here, so forgive me =)
But where Hurley is talking to the "Visitor" in the institution (Which some people are thinking is "Smokey" i think), the "Visitor" says when Hurley asks him to leave "Are they still alive"? Wow! They???
You know what this tells me? There are still more than one party involved. If TPTB arranged a "deal", wouldn't they KNOW if someone was alive? Either Jack's Six took matters into their own hands, or there is a third party with interests in the Island that wasn't involved in the "rescue" (Dharma? Oceanic? the Widmores? the Others' network on the mainland?).
Charlie's dead yet also here. So all "they' that Hurley knows are dead are still alive in some way. His concept of what dead is may be flawed with respect to 'death' on the island.
Perhaps those that die on the island wind up alive in a state that can't be seen by those still 'living'.(maybe they are now with Jacob). And it takes someone special like Ben, Locke, and Now Hurley to see those on the other side. But who said that the other side was death like we think of it.
Of course they, he's obviously saying that he knows that other people were on the island. What's the "wow" factor?
Why would he ask if he knew? If he didn't know then hes not Smokey because Smokeys on the island and would know. I guess the question is, who is the "Visitor" working for? Not the Others, they would know, not whoever is on the "rescue" boat they would know. A third party?

Just so you know "TPTB" refers to the writers, producers, etc. Never anything in the show, so saying 'TPTB arranged a "deal"' doesn't make sense in the context of the acronym.
