Hmmm... I may be stretching a bit, but... If Hurley was really that rich, do you think he might have connections to Sun's dad? I mean, he'd only been rich for a year, but he'd already acquired Locke's box company and the Canadian Shoe Factory.
Oh, and to blast the Kate-Shoe connection: Kate is definately a liar. I'm pretty sure she was talking about college or post-college working when she robbed the bank, but in I Never? Apparently, never been to college...
OK, I agree that Kate's a liar.
But I don't think she's a good one.
Sure, she can fool the guys by distracting them with her "feminine wiles" or whatever.
But I haven't bought it for a minute.
I kind of liked her at first, because she seemed a strong and independant chick.
But after seeing WTCMB again, I just don't like her.
She is an evil, good-for-nothing (besides the obvious) b*tch, and I haven't seen any real redemable qualities.
Sorry to get off topic, but she just bugs me.
As for Hurley, yeah I belive he's connected to more people than we already know about.
But I don't think that any single one of them is connected to them all...
That would focus the story too centrally around one character, and I don't think that is what it's all about.
I recently read in another thread that it had been confirmed by one of the VIPs on the linear board, the watches were meant to entice people to do business with Sun's father. If that is true, perhaps one of the watches was meant for Hurley or his accountant? It would seem to blast Bess's theory that the watches might be meant as a threat or bad luck, which I personally preferred. Still, that might help your theory Alden.
OT, it occurred to me that Michael might also be connected to Claire through Thomas. Michael and Thomas both being artists, it's possible they shared a teacher or something in the past. There's quite an age difference, but there still could be a connection. Perhaps Thomas saw some of MIchael's work in a gallery? Maybe a gallery owner is a connection? Actually, it could be that a young Thomas actually met Michael at some point and looked up to him as an artist. The fact that Thomas didn't want to be a father and Michael did is kind of poetic if you think about it.

The good looks sure don't hurt -- I'm sure it makes men want to believe her. *But I was thinking of that scene in the pilot where she claims she doesn't know how to use a gun, and then again in the bank robbery she does a good job of freaking out and saying she doesn't know how to use a gun... *she looked utterly sincere both times. *That's why I think she's a good liar -- she lies with sincerity. *
(Bess, I never could find a cultural gift-giving guide for Koreans -- so it's entirely possible that they don't have a watch taboo.* But you are right about China -- clocks are a bad gift there.)
i like the idea that one of Jin's watches was intended for Hurley.
One more thing about Hurley. He had his watch out right after the accident to time Claire's contractions. Did he say something about the time then? Several of the good transcript boards have been shut down and I don't have the episode on tape. I wonder if Hurley thinks there might be something wrong with the time of the crash?

Of course, Paik could be taking advantage of the ignorance of the giftees...
Sending a message he doesn't expect them to get.... *Yes, do business with me I'm your friend out of one side of his mouth. *I'm gonna take you for all you're worth out of the other.
It might be Paik's private little joke.

I like it too, except for one thing. Hurley is kind of distant from his business holdings. His accountant seems to be the one in charge, the one Paik would actually need on board. Up to now, connections seem to be through another party, not direct connections. That's why I'm thinking it might have been meant for Hurley's accountant.

Although Hurley has his accountant advise him and make those decisions for him, Mr. Paik wouldn't necessarily know that. I don't see Mr Paik wanting to deal with the middleman. He'd want to go to the top if he could get there.
