Charlotte & Daniel paved the way for the mercenaries to shoot up othersville
That sort of not so important episode involving Juliet's flashback where Ben told Juliet via Goodwin's wife to stop Daniel and Charlotte from getting to the tempest station makes perfect sense now? Daniel and Charlotte knew those lunatics with machine guns would be showing up and had to stop the dharma station from being able to produce gas to possibly wipe out the bad guys and stopping them from performing their mission!?? At the time, I didn't know what to make of it, or what to make of Daniel and Charlotte's purpose on the island, but it is obvious now that they are taking orders from a higher power and are scared not to complete their tasks? They should not be trusted! I would think if they didn't go to that dharma station, Ben could have theoretically gassed all those guys with machine guns and possibly stopped them before the damage was done, or something?

I agree with you. I think Dan has trouble with lying to the Losties, but is being forced to do so somehow, perhaps with the carrot of being able to visit this wondrous, mythical island....Charlotte also.
I think they are good people, being forced to be devious.

I think it's more like they're good people who are unaware they're working for monsters. Judging from Miles' reaction to the shoot out in Otherville, the science team wasn't told of the plans to start a genocide on the island. What better way to convince people to go along with something that is monstrous then tell them they are on the side of good and withhold information. They could've been told something like this: Ben Linus is evil and must be taken down and held for punishment(and it would be kind of hard to argue with that) but still do all of the others deserve to die? I think one of the reasons Charlotte and Daniel were recruited is because they were naive enough to believe it, because since they've arrived in addition to seeming more than a little arrogant(Charlotte more so than Daniel but he has an arrogant streak to). So basically they're the four horsemen of the apocalypse who don't know they're the four horsemen.

I just think the four are finding themselves in the midst of a situation they don't think they can handle...
I believe they were told that Ben is evil and that if he finds out they are on the island he will set off the gas, therefore primary objective has to be getting to the Tempest and shutting the gas off.
