Re: I'm Not Who I Was -- Although I Look The Same.
None of them are the same after the island? Kate thinks she is with the Jack she knows, but he's turning into another person completely? The completely messed up version of himself?
Re: I'm Not Who I Was -- Although I Look The Same.
I'll take crap for this, but...
Hurley's dissociative identity disorder (D.I.D.; previously referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder) would explain everything on the show including the relevance of the story/quote in question.
Also, back in season one we had the Willie Nelson song: "...These are your friends, but are they REAL friends..."
Then there's the numbers (that only Hurley knew about before they got to the island) and the fact that only Hurley can get Locke and Ben to "Jacob." And that when Hurley saw "Jacob" he appeared to be Christian Shepard (who Hurley has presumably never seen/met).
And the constant chess and other games inclusion (what do people do at Santa Rosa? Play games).
And the lists? Ben asks for a list and Hurley's psychiatrist asks for a list. Also, why would Hurley's psychiatrist call Jack to come see Hurley? Sure they're friends, but if Jack was real then Hurley's psychiatrist would realize that seeing Jack would not make Hurley better, wouldn't make him take his meds, wouldn't sway him from his belief that they're all dead or still on the island or whatever. That would be bad psychiatric work.
Then there's the island picture in the psychiatrists office. The fact that "Dave" is a proven alter of Hurley and can still physically "touch" Hurley, just as Charlie does.
I haven't seen it in a thread title, so hope I'm not repeating something said in a thread, but Jack is reading Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to Aaron, saying his dad used to read it to him. Of course, Christian Shephard first showed up in "White Rabbit."
There is another thread, actually.... I am not who I was, or whatever... can't remember the exact line. But, yes, clearly TPTB cannot let the Alice and Looking Glass theme go.

Cardie
And Claire follows the White Rabbit like Jack did.
