ever since this series began, most of the main characters have wanted to go back. when i say most, the two exceptions being rose and locke. both of whom know and believe the island to have healed them, and locke believes in the island wanting them for a purpose.
since the oceanic six have left, we slowly see that slowly but surely one by one gets convinced to go back to the island, almost like they now have been enlightened.
the fact that so many bhuddists concepts come up, dharma , names of stations, etc and the fact of the shambala song being playing all cant be a coincidence. reading up about shambala, there appears to be different views as to whether it is a physical place, or something just metaphorical.
could it be that the island will only communicate with you once you believe that you have to be there, once you accept that the island wants you there to fulifill some purpose?
this is because according to what i read, you can only reach the place of shambala once you have been enlightened. and thats usually a journey or something which you have to go through.
had you gone to any of the survivors and told them while they were in their countries, that they must all congregate on a strange island which no one knoes about , i dont think anyone would have come.
can it now be that they accept that they have to be there, that they will see and feel different things on the island?
it seems like thats why you cant get anyone to the island, people have to first believe in its higher purpose, and perhaps their own

I think this is a very good post, but at the same time I also think that many people have gotten onto the Island w/o a "higher purpose"... or being enlightened.
ya but thats my point , they couldnt really understand it, or even really receive any information the way LOCKE gets told what to do, via visions or signs, its even similar to this star wars type themes going around, yoda lifts the x wing out of the swamp, and luke says in dont believe it, and yoda says that is why you fail. even with ben telling them they have to stay, they had to first leave the island, until the island called them back to the island
True, and look how much Sawyer has changed. Maybe he is now "Enlightened"
I see many religious connections from all the different religions. Locke used a sweat lodge and some type of drugs then starts to have visions. American Indian also used sweat lodges to communicate with the spirits.
However, it could be said that Enlightenment, Redemption, Being Saved, are all basically the same thing. One has to overcome some obstacle to become closer to their God, or Heaven, Paradise....
