New view of the hatch

In this episode, we are shown a broader view of the hatch, and it has been dug up quite a bit!
Is it just me, or does it kind of look like part of a space shuttle? There's no visible damage to the shell, which could mean it's not something that crash landed there, but instead was buried on the site!

I used some screen captures to get an idea of what the entire object looks like, and I've constructed a crude 3D model of what I could see. This picture kind of assumes that the object is symmetrical, since we are not shown all sides. But it should allow for a little discussion on exactly what kind of object this might be.

Some questions to think about:

If it crash landed, why is there no visible damage?
How much bigger is the object than what we can already see?
If it did NOT crash land there, how were those materials obtained to build it? Was it imported?
Why would anyone import an object like that and bury it on a remote island?

Re: New view of the hatch

Oh yeah, I forgot an important question:

If there's light coming from within the hatch, are we to assume it's getting electricity somehow?? I'm a big believer in logic, so I'm sticking with that for now. But the island seems to have a lot of magical properties, so it could be explained by some supernatural force within the capsule.

I've updated the model based on the glimpse we get in the last ten seconds of "Numbers" to include the inscription on the side.

Oh, and if you got ideas on where the hatch came from (another planet, etc), perhaps you could tell us why you think that way! This is, after all... a discussion board.

[ Edit ]
Lisibee: Like you, I thought it was under something, or on a different part.... but the sequence in which they revealed the numbers to us was VERY dark, so I had to go back and look at it. Here's a screen cap, I tried to enhance it:

Re: New view of the hatch

Wow, great 3-D model!* Okay, so here's my question:* don't I remember that the numbers on the hatch/pod-thing were under an overhang, on the side of the pod?* I thought they were on some sort of smooth panel, and this looks like it has ridged sides.* Maybe they're on the side away from the camera, but I don't know....* Color me confused, which is how I've been for most of this season!* *:-\

ETA: Okay, I see where you put them on the narrow side, but I still thought it was under an overhang, like there was a lip of some kind. I do have to go back and re-watch that part, tho. Great job on the model!

Re: New view of the hatch

Nice 3D model first off.

Considering the "serial number" as I like to call it, and the material which appears to be steel (and unbreakable) I would guess this is a military bunker of some sort and it's from our world.* It could be there for the sake of whenever a huge nuclear war strikes, it is a "safe spot" or it could of been built say back during WWII or so.* It definitely looks like a military object though, not something from another planet.*

This island could always be like some sort of "Area 51" where they do god knows what there, genetic engineering, manipulation, something is definitely going on considering there was a POLAR BEAR on the TROPICAL ISLAND. And then there is our friend "the monster" who could be anything from a mutated animal to a machine....I think the government is behind this island, but then again, I just love conspiracy theories.

Re: New view of the hatch

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the model... it's just something I love to do.

BurningStar4: I didn't even think about a military bunker, it makes sense that some country's government would want to establish a safe base in a remote area in case of global disaster, or the need to hideout. (Perhaps Osama is in there!!! ok, that was dumb)

It's such a strange shape for a bunker though! Unless of course, it's much larger than what we can see, and perhaps the cylindrical part is only a vertical access shaft leading down into an underground base!

One thing I noticed too, when the light came on inside- It didn't flicker on, or instantly light up.... it faded in! More like something inside was glowing or eminating light, rather than something electrical.

Re: New view of the hatch

I thought the same thing about the light, it didn't just flicker on like a regular light would, it was like one of those light switches that is a dial and you turn it to gradually increase the light, but that was some bright light too, I can't even begin to imagine what is in that thing lol. And I agree, there has to be some sort of ladder leading up to that door....and I'm sure it is much bigger underneath what we can't see, but who knows....it could just be a tiny circle room?

Re: New view of the hatch

The Hatch is too thin, to be any kind of room, lab etc.

It looks like it would hold a ladder attached to its insides. What do they call them in sci fi shows - Jeffrey tubes?? Leading to all the answers, I hope.

Re: New view of the hatch

OMG It's a giant humidifier!!

Sorry...but seriously, I'm guessing it's much larger than what we can see...and I'm guessing the voice on the other end of Boone's radio transmission came from inside. Maybe the cable Sayid found goes there too...hence the light. But good catch on the slowly-brightening light source...almost made me think of the suitcase shots in Pulp Fiction! Could it be another mystical sighting by Locke, like when he saw the monster?
